Bobotie
Cape Malay spiced minced meat with dried fruit, baked under a golden savory egg custard.

Ingredients (for 2)
- Minced beef or lamb, 500 g
- Onion, 1, chopped
- Garlic, 2 cloves
- Curry powder, 1 tbsp
- Turmeric, 1 tsp
- Apricot jam or chutney, 2 tbsp
- Raisins, 2 tbsp
- White bread, 1 slice, soaked in milk
- Eggs, 2
- Milk, 200 ml
- Bay leaves, 3
Steps
- Heat the oven to 180Β°C. Fry the onion and garlic until soft, add the curry powder and turmeric, then the meat, and brown it.
- Squeeze out the bread and mix it in with the jam, raisins and salt.
- Press into a small baking dish.
- Whisk the eggs with the milk and pour over the top; tuck in the bay leaves.
- Bake for 30β35 minutes until the custard is set and golden. Serve with yellow rice and chutney.
Cook it together: One browns the meat, the other whisks the custard and cooks the yellow rice.
